The Role of Primary Maladaptive Schemas, Cognitive Emotion Regulation and Cognitive Flexibility in Predicting The Quality of Patient Care Among Nurses

Introduction: As one of the most important members of the health care team, nurses play a vital role in the care-treatment system. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the role of primary maladaptive schemas, cognitive emotion regulation and cognitive flexibility in predicting the quality of patient care among nurses.
Methods: The present study was a descriptive-analytical correlational study. The statistical population of the research was all nurses working in the hospitals of Karaj city in 2023, and 150 of them were selected by available sampling method. In order to collect data, Quality Patient Care Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Young Schema Questionnaire and Cognitive Flexibility inventory were used. The collected data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis in SPSS-24 software.
Results: The results showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between the Primary Maladaptive Schemas and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation with the quality of care (P<0.01). There is a positive and significant relationship between adaptive cognitive emotion regulation and cognitive flexibility with the quality of care (P<0.01). Also, the results of multiple regression analysis also revealed that 0.54% of the variance of the quality of patient care is explained by primary maladaptive schemas, cognitive emotion regulation, and cognitive flexibility.
Conclusions: The results of the present study showed that Primary maladaptive schemas, cognitive emotion regulation and cognitive flexibility play a role in the quality of patient care, especially in the field of interpersonal relationships. Therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention to treatments based on emotion regulation, treatment based on schema-therapy and treatment based on acceptance and commitment in order to improve the quality of care of health workers and nurses.
