Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of childhood trauma and emotional dysregulation on suicidal thoughts with the mediation of rumination in nurses with depressive symptoms.
Methods: The present research was correlation based on structural equations. The statistical population of the research included all nurses working in hospitals and medical centers in Tehran in 2023. Among them, 210 people were selected by available sampling method and responded to beck depression inventory-ii, beck suicidal ideation scale, difficulties in emotion regulation scale, childhood trauma questionnaire and ruminative response scale. For data analysis, Pearson correlation, structural equation modeling and SPSS-26 and AMOS-24 software were used.
Results: The results showed the direct effect of childhood trauma on suicidal thoughts (T=2.89, β=0.32), the direct effect of emotional dysregulation on suicidal thoughts (T=3.02, β=0.45) and the direct effect of rumination variable. thoughts on suicidal thoughts (T = 5.09, β = 0.38) was significant. Also, the indirect effect of childhood trauma on suicidal thoughts through the mediating role of rumination is significant (p<0.05, b=0.39). The indirect effect of emotional dysregulation on suicidal thoughts through the mediating role of rumination was significant (p<0.05, b=0.46). The results also showed that the research variables explained a total of 62% of the variance of suicidal thoughts.
Conclusions: Therefore, it can be said that the findings of this study provide us with an important clinical concept that ruminative cognitive styles should be a target for treatment in nurses with depressive symptoms to reduce suicidal thoughts. It is suggested to pay special attention to treatments based on emotion regulation, cognitive therapy based on mindfulness, dialectical behavior therapy, and treatment based on mentalization in nurses with depressive symptoms.
