The prevalence of workplace violence against nurses and its associated factors during the corona pandemic

Introduction: Exposure to violence in the work environment is considered as a risk factor that threatens the health of employees. Nurses are at greater risk due to direct contact with patients and their companions. The stressful and vulnerable conditions of the corona pandemic may have an impact on violence against nurses. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of workplace violence against nurses and its associated factors during the corona pandemic.
Methods: This study was a descriptive-cross-sectional study that was conducted in 2023. In this study, 193 nurses were included in the study as convenience sampling. The data collection tool is a questionnaire created by a researcher with the aim of investigating the prevalence of violence in nurses for 12 months, the views of nurses regarding the trend of verbal and physical violence during the COVID-19 epidemic, the predisposing factors of workplace violence, and the reactions of nurses in the face of workplace violence.
Results: The prevalence of 12-month of verbal and physical violence in nurses was 51.82% and 6.72%, respectively. About 31% had experienced verbal violence more than once. 71% and 83% of nurses respectively believe that the trend of physical and verbal violence against nurses has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the internal factors "patients and companions are not familiar with the duties of nurses", in the external factors, "low number of human resources in the department" and in the interactive factors, "insufficient attention of the personnel to the requests of the patient or his companions" were declared as the most important factors predisposing to violence. The most common response by the participants was "I did not take any action and distanced myself from the environment".
Conclusion: The prevalence of workplace violence against nurses is still high. From the perspective of the participants, the trend of workplace violence against nurses has been increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the multifactorial nature of workplace violence, the prevention and management of occupational violence requires a multiple approach in the field of internal, external and interactive factors.
