Introduction: Assessing work load is very important in health care professionals, because it has effects on managing work load and would be decreased recognition and reaction to emergency situations.
Aim: This study was done to evaluation nurses' mental work load in Shahid Sadoghi Hospital's Emergency Department in Yazd provenience in 2013.
Material & Methods: This cross sectional study was done in (2013) in Shahid Sadoghi Hospital's Emergency Department in Yazd provenience in 2013. Samples were (17) nurses who were selected through convenience sampling. Data gathered through standardized questionnaire NASA-TLX (National aeronautic and space administration task) that it has (6) domains physical, mental, time (process work load), performance, trying and frustration (outcome work load) that measuring in work environment. Validity and reliability has been tested in the study by Mohammadi & et., al (α=0.897). Descriptive statistics and multivariate coefficient of canonical correlation were done through SPSS20.
Results: findings showed that the mean of mental work load was (85.24). Among the six domains of mental workload, the lowest mean was in performance work load (77.71±19.25) and the highest mean was in frustration (90.44 ±15.14).The mean in process work load ( physical, mental and time) was ( 87.34) and the mean in outcome work load ( trying, performance and frustration) was ( 83.28).
Conclusion: In regarding to high mental work load in process domain in nurses it would be suggested that nurse managers reducing emergency nurses' workload by providing welfare services for them , motivate them and implement triage in emergency department.
