Designing applied model for "managerial technique 5 S" in operating room: a case study

Introduction: The complexity and diversity of processes in operating rooms of hospitals, has led to the discipline and organization workplace is not desirable, and the staff nursing spend a lot of time for search equipment for patient care. Workplace organization technique (5S) technique is a simple but powerful approach for workplace improvement in hospitals.

 Aim: this study was done to assessing successful applying this technique "managerial technique 5 S" in operation room, and the end an applied model will present.

Method: The case study was conducted in Beheshti hospital in Esfahan in 2013. After obtaining informed consent from hospital (5S) audit checklist for healthcare was used to determine current status of workplace. Then audit score computed and based on workshops in (5S) technique implemented for arrangement the operating room (Sort، Set in order، Shine، Standardize، Sustain) in operation room for 6 weeks. After (30) days (5S) audit were conducted again. Also, before and after the implementation of (5S) audits, staff's points of view have been conducted.  All of data were analyzed by paired t-test.

Results: The (5S) audit score was (3.2) before the study and increase to (4.6) after the (5S) implementation. (The minimum acceptable audit score was 4.2). Audit results from staff's point of view showed that reduced the leaving operating room by the personnel during the surgery and time of searching equipment  were different significantly.

Conclusion: In operation room "managerial technique 5 S" applicable successfully.  So, we recommend that nurse manager use this model for workplace organizing and saving time in operating room and other settings of hospitals.
