Introduction: Emotional intelligence is an important element of education and it is one of the components of Educational Management. Emotional intelligence is core of clinical nursing practice. Students are frequently faced with these conflicts when they enter the clinical course, which leads to the formation of a sense of threat, loss of confidence and their motivation.
Aim: This study aimed to determine the level of emotional intelligence in nursing students at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (2014).
Method: IA cross-sectional study (Descriptive analysis type) was undertaken using Schutte Scale of Emotional intelligence (1998). 320 First-, second-, third-, and forth-year undergraduate students at Tehran University of Medical Sciences were selected using stratified random sampling in 2014. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 18, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Results: The mean score of emotional intelligence in nursing students was (149.14 ± 15.62). Nursing students received the highest scores in the dimensions of emotion regulation from emotional intelligence scale. According to the negative Pearson correlation coefficient, Different dimensions of emotional intelligence had a significant inverse correlation with age (P= 0/010). Students whose semester GPA were above 17, had higher emotional quotient (P=0/006).
Conclusion: Based on findings educational Management at the School of Nursing by entering emotion regulation skills training and strengthening other dimensions of emotional intelligence, such as Assessment of emotion, in the curriculum; could improve emotional intelligence and good communication in nursing students who will be the future nurses.
