The Relationship Between Occupational Stress and Visual Fatigue Among Nurses Working at Hakim Jorjani Hospital, Gorgan, Iran in 2025

Introduction:Occupational stress is one of the most important challenges in the nursing profession and can significantly affect both the physical and psychological health of healthcare workers. On the other hand, visual fatigue is recognized as one of the consequences of exposure to digital displays in workplace settings. Despite the importance of both variables, limited evidence exists regarding their relationship among nurses. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between occupational stress and visual fatigue among nurses working at Hakim Jorjani Hospital, Gorgan, Iran, in 2025.
Methods:This cross-sectional descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 116 nurses. Participants were selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Visual Fatigue Questionnaire, and the Expanded Nursing Stress Scale (ENSS). Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 21. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests (Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis, and Spearman correlation coefficient) were applied. The significance level was set at 0.05.
Results:The results showed a high level of occupational stress and a low level of visual fatigue among nurses. Spearman correlation analysis indicated no significant relationship between occupational stress and visual fatigue (P = 0.06). However, occupational stress was significantly associated with age, gender, and marital status (P < 0.05), while visual fatigue showed no significant relationship with demographic variables (P > 0.05).
Discussion:The findings suggest that occupational stress and visual fatigue are two independent phenomena with different underlying mechanisms. Occupational stress is mainly driven by psychosocial and organizational factors such as high workload and staff shortages, whereas visual fatigue is primarily influenced by ergonomic conditions and duration of screen exposure. The absence of a significant relationship between these variables is consistent with previous scientific evidence.
Conclusion:The results of this study indicate that although occupational stress among nurses is high, it is not associated with visual fatigue. Therefore, stress reduction interventions should focus on organizational factors, while prevention of visual fatigue requires improvement in workplace ergonomic conditions.
