Introduction:The nursing profession is considered one of the most stressful occupations because of nurses’ continuous exposure to stressful situations and challenges in the clinical environment. Under these circumstances, nurses’ ability to adapt effectively to stressors while maintaining optimal performance is particularly important, and resilience may play a key role in this process. Among nurses, higher levels of resilience have been associated with lower perceived stress, with an inverse relationship reported between resilience and the severity of perceived stress. Meichenbaum’s Stress Inoculation Training (SIT), as an intervention based on the teaching and practice of coping skills, may enhance individuals’ ability to adapt to stress by preparing them to respond more effectively to stressful situations. Methods:This randomized controlled trial included 64 eligible nurses who were allocated to the intervention (n=32) and control (n=32) groups using block randomization. The intervention consisted of Meichenbaum’s Stress Inoculation Training, delivered virtually to the intervention group in eight sessions lasting 45–60 minutes each. The Gray-Toft and Anderson Nursing Stress Scale was used to assess stress and determine eligibility for study participation. Nurses’ resilience was assessed using the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-25). Data were analyzed using the independent-samples t-test and Wilcoxon test. Results:According to the independent-samples t-test, a statistically significant difference was observed in mean resilience scores between the intervention and control groups after the intervention (P=0.042). The Wilcoxon test also showed a statistically significant difference in mean resilience scores in the intervention group before and after the intervention (P<0.001). Mean resilience scores among nurses increased following the intervention compared with baseline. Conclusion: Meichenbaum’s Stress Inoculation Training can be effective in enhancing nurses’ resilience. Given the importance of resilience in helping nurses adapt to stressful clinical conditions, this educational approach may be considered as a potentially useful intervention for improving nurses’ resilience.
