Introduction: The complex transformations occurring in healthcare systems, the growing burden of chronic diseases, changing population needs, and the increasing demand for innovative care delivery have shifted the role of nurses from traditional care providers to active contributors in designing and developing novel healthcare solutions. In this context, nursing entrepreneurship has emerged as an innovative concept that provides opportunities to enhance professional autonomy, develop innovative services, and create social and economic value within healthcare systems. Despite its growing importance, a comprehensive understanding of the dimensions, influencing factors, and challenges associated with the development of nursing entrepreneurship remains limited.
Methods: A narrative review was conducted through a systematic search of published literature in major scientific databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Studies focusing on nursing entrepreneurship, nursing innovation, entrepreneurial competencies, innovative leadership, and health technologies were reviewed. Following screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 studies were included in the final synthesis. Data were extracted and analyzed using narrative content analysis.
Results: The synthesis of the reviewed studies identified five major themes: (1) nursing entrepreneurship as an expansion of professional roles and innovative identity;(2) individual competencies and entrepreneurship education; (3) the role of entrepreneurial leadership and organizational support; (4) emerging health technologies and digital transformation; and (5) structural barriers and policy requirements. The findings indicated that creativity, self-efficacy, critical thinking, experiential learning, supportive organizational culture, and access to technological resources are key determinants of nurses’ entrepreneurial behaviors. Conversely, regulatory limitations, lack of formal entrepreneurship education, and insufficient organizational support were reported as major barriers.
Conclusion: Nursing entrepreneurship represents a strategic capability for transforming the nursing profession and responding to emerging healthcare challenges. Advancing this field requires a multidimensional approach involving reform of nursing education, strengthening innovative leadership, establishing supportive organizational environments, and developing professional policies. Promoting nursing entrepreneurship can enhance professional autonomy, improve healthcare service quality, and facilitate sustainable value creation within healthcare systems.
